PRU's PROJECT

What is the PRU Project?

RESOLVEit visit a PRU for a day and run sessions for students during the day and then run TAT (Train a Trainer) for as many staff as wish to attend. The TAT is fantastic CPD and equips staff to run RESOLVEit workshops and self-defence sessions throughout the school year.

The PRU Project is aimed at strengthening relationships between PRU students, their peers, their tutors and helping students interact in a more positive way with local communities.

We believe that every child and young person should have the opportunity to be the best they can be. Through working directly with young people in PRU’s and then in turn giving their teachers the resources and skills needed to continue that work with them, we believe that we can help students achieve a stronger sense of self-worth and start to help them feel that they are a valued part of the community.

Every participating PRU receives Safety School status, access to RESOLVEit online resources and full support from the RESOLVEit HQ team.

How is it funded?

In February 2021, RESOLVEit was awarded a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund which will allow us to offer the PRU Project completely free to 16 PRU’s across Wales. The initial areas covered are; Swansea, Wrexham, Pembroke Dock, Cardigan, Newport, Carmarthen and all surrounding areas.

If you work for a PRU in one of these areas and would like to find out more about participating in the PRU Project, please get in touch with philippa@resolveitcic.co.uk

What is the future of the PRU Project?

CLOCK

Our hope is that this can become a project that is repeated on an annual basis so all PRU students and staff can have ongoing access to our personal safety and self-defence workshops.

Future plans could include PRU students delivering personal safety sessions to local youth groups so they can truly feel part of their community in a positive way. For students who really enjoy and want to understand more about personal safety and self-defence, it may be possible to secure further funding which could allow them to complete a Level 2 BTEC in Personal Safety & Self Defence. A new skill for their CV!

Any feedback so far?

FORMS

We ran some pilot sessions with Key Stage 3 students in Pembrokeshire Learning Centre and this was their tutor’s feedback; “All pupils (and staff) thoroughly enjoyed every session, there was a high level of participation and interest. Many pupils have experienced violence at some point of their lives. Learning that there are many elements to consider around personal safety is paramount.

Self-defence is important to all members of society and the understanding that it is used only as a last resort is essential. The sessions have been extremely positive and we would encourage this to be delivered across the board throughout mainstream settings as well.

Personal safety and self-defence offer a good medium to deliver something that pupils can relate to easily and maintains their interest in a fun and kinaesthetic manner.” (Nia Owens, Pembrokeshire Learning Centre, 2020)
